This vase is created using slabs of stoneware clay that are formed and thinned without the use of a mechanical roller or machinery. The clay is stretched, cut, trimmed and fastened entirely by hand.
Once fabricated, the piece is dried slowly over another one to two weeks (depending on the weather) before being fired in an electric kiln to 1828 degrees Fahrenheit. The piece is then glazed and fired a second time to 2232 degrees Fahrenheit.
During this second firing the glaze melts and becomes glass. The stripe in the center of the vase is left unglazed to expose the raw clay body. This rough/smooth contrast draws both the eye and the hand to explore the vessel.
The interior of the vase is glazed completely, ensuring the vase is water-tight. Please note the glaze in this color way is not considered food-safe. As each piece is handmade, there may be slight variations in sizing, weight, or the curvature of the teardrop.
